2008 Saturn Vue Pricing Announced

Saturn's onslaught of new products continues with the new 2008 Saturn Vue. With the addition of this vehicle, only the lowly Ion carries the torch for old-school Saturn-think (at least, until the Astra arrives.) Like the Aura and Sky, the Vue shares its platform and looks with an Opel; in this case it's the Antara that debuted at the Paris show in September.

It's apparent from first glance that this isn't the same old Vue, but the differences also go far below the surface. Six air bags are standard, as is a six-speed transmission with V-6 models. And while the sixteen-inch standard wheels are a bit on the small side, seventeens are available. (Speaking of availability, there's no word yet as to whether the Vue will get Opel's clever built-in, fold-away rear-bumper bike rack, but we really hope it does.) The base model, badged XE, uses a 2.4-liter I-4 with 164 horsepower and direct fuel injection, but is available only with front-wheel drive and a four-speed automatic. The top-line, four-wheel drive Vue XR, powered by a 250-horsepower V-6 with variable valve timing mated to a six-speed automatic, promises to be more fun, and Saturn promises a five-speed manual is on the way, too. (It's unclear if the stick will be offered with only the four, only with the V-6, or with both.)

Saturn has announced a base price of $21,395 for the 2008 Vue, a hike of $3295 over the outgoing model. While that may seem a bit excessive, that actually puts the Vue directly between the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4, whose prices are just a few hundred dollars lower and higher, respectively. Saturn also defends the increase by noting that the base engine is more powerful and is linked to a standard automatic transmission. Standard stability control and side curtain air bags also justify the increase.

Forthcoming is a Red Line model, which will use the same V-6 engine and transmission with different suspension and bigger wheels. We haven't driven one yet, but on paper it promises to be a huge improvement over the outgoing model.

The Vue Green line will also debut in 2008, as GM's first front-wheel-drive 2-mode hybrid. GM has announced its intention to produce a plug-in variant of the Vue Green Line, but development of that system is still underway and no launch date has been set.

Adult Rated Car Wash

Down Under at the Bubbles 'n' Babes car wash in Brisbane Australia, you can get a car wash from a naked woman and a lap dance, but it'll cost you a cool $82. If that's too much money for you, you can get the nude wash minus the up-close-and-personal element for $45. The establishment is owned by a strip club owner (shocking...we know), and it uses recycled water to keep in compliance with strict usage rules brought on by a prolonged drought.

It should come as no surprise that local government officials were against the nudie wash, but in the end, Brisbane's mayor decided that no rules were being broken. We don't know about you, but we have trouble ponying up the extra cash for high-grade motor oil or gasoline, and seriously, $45 for a basic car wash is pretty ridiculous, despite the "free" show that comes with it.

Toyota FT-HS coming in 2009

The June '07 print edition of Automobile is full of juicy information, and one of the more significant bits of news appears in a sidebar on page 30. According to the magazine, Toyota has given the FT-HS hybrid sports car the green light, and the Calty-designed production version will make its debut in 2009. It's being billed by Automobile as the spiritual successor to the late, lamented Supra -- a position that's hard to argue assuming you can look past the probable lack of an inline 6. Like the concept, the two-seat FT-HS will pair the company's Hybrid Synergy Drive with an as-yet-undetermined gasoline engine (the concept utilized a 3.5-liter V6). Power and pricing aren't discussed, but if the numbers thrown around when the concept was introduced -- 400 horses and mid-level dollar amounts -- are feasible, the thing should have plenty of takers.

Freightliner announces new big rig: the Cascadia

It may not look like anything revolutionary to the untrained eye, but to hear DaimlerChrysler tell it, the all-new Freightliner Cascadia is very much a big deal. It's built on a new platform that readily accepts EPA '07-compliant engines and is ready to play home to powerplants built off DCX's Global Heavy Duty Engine Platform, the first of which are set to arrive later this year from Detroit Diesel. It also incorporates a new, common Electric/Electronic Architecture, and many features and systems were designed from the outset to be easily accessible, repairable, and/or replaceable to ensure that the rig's able to maximize its on-road time.

It's lighter than other competitors due in large part to its aluminum cab, and boasts a 3% increase in fuel efficiency over its predecessors thanks to a design that was perfected using Freightliner's wind tunnel, which is the only one designed for vehicles of this class. Driver and passenger are not ignored either. The cab features car-inspired ergonomics, an improved HVAC system, copious sound-deadening measures, larger seats that sit on their own shock absorbers tuned to the trucks suspension settings, improved lighting, and more. HUMMER 1, 2, 3 . . . and now 4: H4 confirmed for 2010

There's no better moment than the day after Earth Day to announce a new smaller, kinder, gentler Hummer. Martin Walsh, Hummer's general manager, said "Our growth will be downwards in terms of size," and that begins with the now-official H4. Walsh also indicated there might be a smaller model than the H4 if need be.

The H4 comes below the H3 in the pecking order, meant as a compact SUV to go against competitors like the Nissan Murano. As such, Walsh said the H4 would be built on an upcoming compact GM platform, but didn't say which one. As long as Hummer-philes get the same gruff styling cues and useful ability in the dirty stuff, that shouldn't be a problem. Hummer insiders are apparently fretting that GM might "go soft" with the H4, but even Walsh readily admits, "We have to offer legitimate off-road capability."

Last year Hummer sold 56,000 H3's and 14,000 H2's. The H4 could bump those numbers up by an additional 40,000 units. Also in the pipeline are "bio-fuel powertrains '...in every single vehicle application," an H3 SUT, and even though it was ruled out late last year, news out of Australia is that a hybrid could even be in the works. It's a new day indeed. As for the H4, sources tell us to look for a preview of it in concept guise during next year's auto show circuit, likely in Detroit.

2007 Toyota Corolla LE

Last week’s test car, Toyota’s compact Corolla, was a pleasant surprise. The last Corolla I drove was a little white one from the early 80s - my daughter Stephanie’s high school and college car. She named it Skippy. She bought it with 125,000 miles already spent and drove it about seven years. Skippy was approaching 200,000 miles when Stephanie finally sold it. I had to borrow it once when the transmission went out of my XR4Ti. In spite of being a bit slow I remember Skippy being plain and simple but reasonably fun to drive, with its little 4-cylinder and 5-speed stick. I think the only thing that ever went wrong with the car was a battery explosion.

That generation of Corolla was the first product of the GM joint venture called New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) wherein the two companies built a new factory in Freemont, California and each built a car there - the Corolla and GEO Prism. Those early cars were pretty crass and unsophisticated, but plenty dependable. Each successive generation became more sophisticated and complete. Now this Corolla, still a NUMMI product, is literally just a fine little Camry – and a well-equipped one at that.

Inside, our initial impression is of a nicely appointed family sedan, including good quality materials throughout, wood grain trim, power windows, mirrors and locks, keyless entry, tilt steering wheel, AC with air filter and plenty of room considering its size. I’m a big guy and I was entirely comfortable driving the Corolla. Though I didn’t have any back seat passengers there looked to be lots of room back there. And the trunk, too, appears generous. We can even tow 1,500 pounds with it if we want.

Power is more than adequate for this car. A 1.8-litre DOHC, 16-valve, 4-banger with 126-hp and 122 lb-ft does the job well enough. With the 4-speed automatic transmission it’s rated at 30-mpg city and 38 on the highway. With the 5-speed manual it’ll do 32 and 41. Wow. As I was returning the Corolla to the press fleet distributor the low-fuel light came on just as the trip odometer rolled over 500 miles. With the 13.2-gallon fuel tank that means we got close to 40-mpg with the little squirt.

Since I was out of town on a junket most of the week I didn’t get to spend any serious seat time with the Corolla but I would not hesitate to make a good long road trip with guests and luggage. A 13.6-cu-ft trunk would accommodate enough stuff for a long weekend at least.

Handling was very good. Corolla is front-wheel-drive, of course. Steering is rack-and-pinion with engine speed-sensing power assist. Suspension is McPherson struts in front and semi-independent (torsion beam) rear suspension and damping appropriate for a comfortable sedan. Front disc and rear drum brakes are competent. On our cloverleaf freeway entrance the Corolla didn’t feel like a car I wanted to push too hard but it got up to speed in plenty of time, which not all economy cars will do.

At around 16-grand this well-dressed peasant presents well. Compared to the other products in its class the experts rate it about in the center considering all categories. It’s due for redesign soon so we’ll be seeing another upgrade and modernization. We can expect it to be a class-leading redo if redesigns of Camry and Avalon are any gauge.

Our test car shows a base price of $16,215 (though Toyota’s web site says $15,415). That base price includes an amazing amount of content. In addition we have almost 3-grand worth of options bringing our total to $19,098. Options include: All Weather Guard Package for $70, ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and Tire Pressure Monitor for $390, Driver and Passenger Side and Curtain air bags for $655, Audio Value Package for $450, Stability Control/Traction Control for $650 and special carpet floor mats with the Corolla name for $88.

Warranty is 36 months/36,000 miles basic and 60 months/60,000 miles on the powertrain.

In the genre of economical, comfortable, attractive but unobtrusive, small sedans it would be hard to beat the Corolla. It’s the kind of car one could buy and drive forever for hundreds of thousands of miles, if that be the goal. If we figured out the cost per mile for a high mileage plan I bet it would be mighty impressive.

2008 BMW M3 V-8 Engine Information!

Like it or not, after fifteen years of inline-sixes in the M3, the time has come to move on. The E92 M3 needs to compete against the 420-hp Audi RS4, so it needs more than the previous M3's 3.2 liters of displacement. BMW says cylinders larger than 500cc are less than ideal, so it had no choice but to go to a V-8.

Luckily for purists, BMW's M Division doesn't believe in turbocharging - they feel that it just adds weight and fuel consumption. Their solution is, instead, to extract power from engines by building them to sustain speeds heretofore enjoyed only by your trusty Osterizer.

8400 rpm, that is, making it the fastest high-volume V-8 in the world. And all that revving works - the 3999-cc, 90-degree cross-plane-crank V-8 frappés out 420 hp @ 8300 rpm and 295 lb-ft @ 3900 rpm. BMW hasn't finalized its U.S. M3 specifications - the 420 number is actually German horsepower, Pferdestärke, which is the equivalent of 414 U.S. horsepower. (Our horses are slightly stronger - they eat Wheaties.)

The engine, however, is rated at 309 kW, which is the same as the Audi RS4. Audi managed to certify that engine to both 420 PS (German) and 420 hp (US). We suspect BMW will do the same, because the M3's engine is nothing more than the latest bomb dropped in the German horsepower war, landing right on top of the RS4's pretty red V-8.

2008 BMW 335i Convertible

With its fourth-generation 3-series convertible, BMW joins the trend toward retractable hard tops--following the likes of the Mercedes-Benz SL, the Volvo C70, and the Volkswagen Eos. The switch is a curious one for BMW, as it adds weight and loses what even BMW's U.S. chief Tom Purves admits is the "romance" of a raised soft top (as on BMW's own 6-series). And unlike the aforementioned models, the 3-series droptop isn't doing double duty as a coupe. BMW will very happily sell you a fixed-roof 3-series two-door, if you wish.

While a retractable hard top may be a surprising choice for BMW, it's not without benefits. The solid roof makes for a very quiet closed car. Its slim C-pillars provide far better visibility than you get with a soft top. And it creates a sleek profile, although it's marred somewhat by the cutlines created by the roof panels and the wrap-over trunk lid.

You also have to admire the execution of this steel top. It's divided into three sections, which neatly flatten and stack before disappearing under the deck lid. BMW was able to preserve 7.4 cubic feet of trunk room with the top stowed (slightly less than the softtop's 7.7 cubic feet), but you'll need slim luggage to slip it under the stowed roof. (Order the Comfort Access package, and the stowed top lifts slightly to aid luggage loading.) Trunk capacity with the roof raised is 12.4 cubic feet, a big improvement over the previous model's 8.9 cubic feet. Additionally, the rear seatback folds down to turn the space behind the front seats into a flat-bottomed cargo hold, and there's an optional trunk pass-through that is usable even with the top down.

A retractable hard top is heavier than a soft top, and so, compared with the coupe, the convertible's weight penalty of about 400 pounds is more than the previous model's roughly 340 pounds. The extra heft slightly dulls the edge of this very sporty car. The wiggle-free structure, however, will impress drivers of the previous 3-series cabrio and will amaze owners of the second-generation model.

Clearly, BMW thinks the 3.0-liter six is the right size powerplant for this car, since five of the six engines it offers in the 3-series convertible are 3.0-liter sixes. For us, choices mirror those in the coupe: a 230-hp 328i and a 300-hp 335i. Europeans skip the 328i, but they do get the 335i, a 268-hp 330i, a 215-hp 325i, a 228-hp 330d, plus a four-cylinder 320i.

The only version BMW bothered to bring to Arizona was the 335i--but, hey, with an engine this good, favoritism is understandable. Even with the convertible's extra poundage, the twin-turbo's 300 lb-ft of torque blasts the 335i from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds with a manual transmission or 5.7 with the automatic (according to BMW). Still more impressive is the utterly seamless turbo integration and the fantastic sound the engine makes as it zooms up the tach, rendered all the more intense when it's not muffled by the roof or windows.

Both the 328i and the 335i are available with BMW's well-regarded six-speed manual, but for our drive, we opted for the new ZF six-speed automatic that was introduced on the coupe. There is no shame in choosing this autobox; it's an absolute sweetheart. It whips off shifts nearly as fast as VW/Audi's dual-clutch automatic, and it matches revs on downshifts. The optional shift paddles are beautifully executed: push forward for a downshift, pull back for an upshift--no need to move the gear lever out of D. Unfortunately, the 328i gets a less-sophisticated six-speed automatic (no paddles, no rev-matching, slower shifts).

We're not as thrilled about some other options on our test car, specifically the overly helpful active steering, which is a stain on one of the 3-series' finest attributes, and the always annoying iDrive, which comes with navigation.

The optional leather upholstery is now an even cooler option, with heat-reflecting technology that can lower its surface temperature by as much as 36 degrees. Riders soaking up rays in the rear seat will enjoy more shoulder and elbow room than before, although knee room remains tight.

But really, who cares about them? This is still a car that's all about the driver. The stellar twin-turbo six, the razor-sharp automatic, and the suspension's athleticism clearly make this the BMW of hardtop convertibles.

Alternative Fuel Cars on the Right Track

Doing something about global warming and the rapid depletion of the world’s non-renewable energy resources has recently become an important topic on some governments' agendas, and hopefully not only because elections
are coming.

The first concrete measures have been to introduce extra taxes for purchasing or importing a car of which designers couldn't care less about the environment.

US now have the “Gas Guzzler Tax”, and some countries in the European Union are adding up to 100% of a guzzling second hand car's value, in import taxes. The Middle East situation is not looking bright, and don't forget that most of the world's oil is there. So, many car manufacturers began, though yet a bit shy, researching alternative fuels for your car.

Your car could soon become a vegetarian thanks to a process for cost-effectively converting cellulosic biomass, such as grass, wood, wheat and rice straw, into ethanol that can be used for fuel, due to inventors such as Lee Lynd, professor of engineering and adjunct professor of biology at Dartmouth College.

Lynd and his colleagues’ inventions are at the forefront of advanced technologies for converting biomass feedstocks into motor vehicle fuels.

Once, while being on a farm, he thought: “My goodness, that pile of grass and whatnot is four-feet high, and if you put a thermometer down into the bottom of that, it’s 150 degrees Fahrenheit.”

He realized that cellulose-utilizing bacteria that produced ethanol were known, and that production and utilization of cellulosic biofuels could involve a sustainable carbon cycle with no net emissions of carbon dioxide.

In the United States today, fuel ethanol is derived from corn, which is available in limited quantities and consumes substantial amounts of fossil energy as currently produced.

On the other hand, cellulose is the most abundant organic compound on the face of the Earth and production of fuel from cellulosic biomass displaces far more fossil fuel than is required to produce.

“Developing a microbe that can convert cellulosic biomass to ethanol can be approached in one of two ways,” said Lynd. “Either start with organisms that are able to grow well on biomass and modify them to produce ethanol better, or start with organisms that produce ethanol well and modify them so that they can grow on biomass.”

Lynd’s group is investigating both approaches and has recently engineered thermophilic bacteria to produce ethanol as the only fermentation product, and yeast to grow on cellulose.

No need to mention the countless applications and benefits that such research would present for a better future for all of us, I will just say that over a century of polluting the soil, the water and the air will get back at us, someday, if we don't try to repair what's left to repair, since undoing all of it is impossible.

Supercars in Paris

Despite the fact that supercars are all about status, flash and money there is something unavoidably appealing about them; maybe it’s the power, speed and handling. I can still remember the first time I saw a Lamborghini Countach in person. The scale of the car was amazing, sleek low and incredibly wide. In fact most supercars are much bigger than they look on the glossy pages of magazines. This begs a few questions: what would it be like to actually drive one of these powerful, unwieldy and massive machines on the streets of a crowded city, and how practical would it be for transporting luggage and running errands? Fortunately the boys at Top Gear have a big enough budget to answer these questions.

Using three top of the line exotics, the Ford GT, Pagani Zonda and Ferrari F430, Top Gear put them through the paces of real world driving and parking on the streets of Paris…or they would have got to the driving part if they could have gotten out of the parking garage. This clip doesn’t bust any myths, we all know super cars are built for smooth open roads or race tracks not parking garages, but it is certainly interesting to watch the supercars try and do “normal car” tasks and fail. I knew there was a reason so many people drove Hondas and not Zondas.

Within the span of a couple months, the new "game-changing" Tundra was launched, Toyota then placed cash on the hood of the new truck, the guys and girls over at Nissan canceled their HD version of the Titan, and now more cash is needed to move Tundras.

Honda launches the Civic Type R sedan in Japan

Come Friday, March 30, the new Civic Type R will go on sale in Japan. Based on the current Civic 4-door, the Type R is powered by a screaming, normally aspirated 2.0-liter four cylinder (K20A) that eclipses 100 hp/liter, producing around 225 ponies at 8,000 rpm and 159 lb-ft of torque at 6,100 rpm.. A six-speed manual transmission feeds power to the front wheels -- 18-inch units shod with a set of Bridgestone Potenzas. Four-piston Brembos are visible between the spokes and provide the car's stopping power. Body rigidity is said to be 50% better than that of the previous Integra Type R (Acura RSX), and the car weighs in at 1,250 kg (2755 lbs) with no A/C installed. The creature comfort adds another 20 kg (44 lbs).

Externally, a redesigned front fascia incorporates a large lower air intake for improved breathing. The hood and front fenders are unique to the Type R, as is the rear bumper with its integrated diffuser. Red "H" emblems, sill extensions and the to-be-expected rear wing cap off the car's racy look. Type R badging adorns the rear of the car, and logo decals are available for owners who want to add them to the spot in front of the rear wheel cutout. Additionally, Modulo provides an aftermarket stripe kit and accessory driving lights, both of which you can see in the attached gallery. Viewed in profile, the Type R has an aggressive stance, with a decidedly pointed snout. It is the best-looking Civic sedan available in any market.

Inside, Type R-exclusive front seats await the driver and passenger, and the upholstery is available in either all-black or a black-and-red two-tone. An aluminum shift knob, metallic pedals, red steering wheel logo, and an Engine Start button make it clear that this is not your ordinary Civic, while options such as ambient lighting in the footwells and Honda's hard-disk navigation system allow for further personalization. Three paint colors -- Championship White, Super Platinum metallic, and Vivid Blue Pearl -- are offered, and Honda hopes to sell 400 of the cars each month at a price of 2,835,000 yen (which directly translates to around $24,000 USD for those of you who were wondering, not that it really applies to us). All we know is that we want one. Badly.

Holden engineering chief says New V12 Cadillac not coming from Oz

Bob Lutz recently confirmed that Cadillac is developing a top-of-the-line model powered by a V12 to take on the Mercedes S-class and BMW 7 series. Unlike other recent rear-wheel-drive models like the Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet Camaro, the new model will not be developed by the Holden team in Australia. Holden engineering director Tony Hyde said his engineers are not involved in any way in the V12 development. An Australian report had claimed that the new car would be based on the new Zeta platform that underpins the other new RWD GM cars with the V-12 being based on a pair of 3.6L V-6s joined together.

Range Rover, caring for the drug lords!

We enjoy reporting on even the most removed niche vehicles on the market, but here's something that will only be of interest to drug lords living in the hillside jungles of South America, because few others would have use for an armored, stretched Range Rover (with the possible exception of the British royals).

This Range Rover has been stretched by 25 centimeters (about ten inches), primarily to the benefit of its rear seat occupants. The body panels and floor have been lined and plated in Kevlar, the same stuff police use in their bulletproof vests. Reinforced windows have been fitted that can even withstand volleys from automatic machine guns and sniper rifles. Match all that with an Explosafe rupture- and fire-proof fuel tank and the requisite run-flat tires, and you've got yourself a very swanky armored personnel carrier.

Since such a vehicle is likely to spend most of its life helping occupants evade capture by US drug enforcement agents, it's only fitting that it has been outfitted with all that gear by First Defense, an American personal security firm.

The Subaru Impreza has changed faces more times than a dirty politician, but still manages to sell well thanks largely to a loyal customer base. And those loyal customers – not to mention the enthusiasts to whom the letters s-t-i are close to g-o-d – have been patiently awaiting the launch of the current Impreza's replacement, due for unveiling at the New York Auto Show in April and on the market next year.

These images published in Japan are now hitting the internet, and if the illustrations are accurate, the wait just might be over, not to mention worthwhile. Subaru's design director, Andreas Zapatinas, who was responsible for the current Subie's rather unfortunate (though arguably distinctive) front end, was shown the door. And it seems Zapatinas' successors did a much better job putting together a sharp-looking cohesive package that should make the technically excellent Impreza more palatable – if not more desirable – to a broader range of customers.

TAG Team: Heuer and Mercedes unveil new SLR Chronograph

TAG Heuer is a watchmaker with a long history in motorsports, sponsoring racing events, drivers and teams for decades. Even Steve McQueen wore one. Now the Swiss watchmaker has unveiled the "TAG Heuer SLR for Mercedes-Benz", the third timepiece made in collaboration with the German automaker.

The automatic chronograph features the TAG Heuer Calibre 17 movement enclosed in a uniquely-designed case that takes its styling cues from the SLR McLaren and boasts a number of unique features. While conventional chronographs have the function buttons mounted on the side of the case, TAG Heuer patented a mechanism placing the buttons next to the bezel, like on the previous SLR wristwatch, only angled at 45 degrees. TAG Heuer managed to eliminate the functional tradeoff between a diver's watch and a chronograph by using two bezels: a black titanium bezel with markings against which the user can measure between mileposts to calculate the exact speed all the way up to 400 km/h (248 mph), and a unique second bezel for counting down – handy for qualifying sessions and rally-style timed stages. The designers avoided taking the easy way out: it's the inner bezel that rotates, adjusted by a second crown positioned at 9 o'clock.

When Honda released information about the development of its Advanced VTEC (A-VTEC) system in September, we were looking forward to seeing how the new system would be employed in the next generation of Acuras and Hondas. The system will increase torque, power and fuel economy, all while oozing fewer emissions into the atmosphere. Good stuff, all of it.

Not much has been released since, but the variable valve timing obsessed folks over that the Temple of VTEC (TOV) came across a new patent filed by Honda entitled the "Variable valve actuation device." The setup is similar to BMW's Valvetronic system, by varying the lift and duration of the valves throughout the powerband, likely eliminating that abrupt, albeit entertaining, switch over to the hot lobes. It can be employed in both SOHC and DOHC applications and will likely find a home in the 2008 model Accord.

More power, more torque, less emissions, plus the option of a lightweight SOHC engine? Bring it.

Geneva Motor Show: Mazda Hakaze in the rippled metal

We have already seen media pics of the Mazda Hakaze. We even have all of the details about the mechanicals. What we didn't have until today are live shots and personal impressions of what it's really like in the "flesh." Well, thanks to our own Damon Lavrinc in Geneva, we do now. He describes it as "ambitious," "beautifully fluid", and, when referring to all of Mazda's recent concepts, a "modern Pininfarina with a Japanese flare." It brings some cohesion to recent Mazda offerings like the CX-7 and CX-9.

Following on the heels of the Nagare and Ryuga concepts Mazda has shown over the past year, the Hakaze adds a "flying leaf" motif to the mix. The body surface mimics its predecessors with the ripples, this time looking like flowing sand dunes, which Mazda's designers are calling the "flop" technique of color manipulation.

Whatever. Besides giving us the emotional embodiment of "kite-surfing," the important thing to note about the Hakaze is the fact that Mazda has said it is the one concept of the three that has the best chance of seeing production.Ready for a CX-5, everybody?

BMW 6-series to get twin-turbo diesel

CAR Online is reporting that BMW is set to install their 3.0-liter twin-turbo diesel into its 6-series coupe later this year. The force-fed oil-burner is the same one BMW uses in the 5-series sedan and the very same 535d that AB Green's Mike Magda got to drive (if briefly) during the LA Auto Show last year. That 535d sibling hustles to 60 mph from a standing start in just 6.5 seconds, thanks in large part to its 413 lb-ft of torque. That's even more torque than is found in the range-topping M6 (a measly 383). Although horsepower is considerably lower at 272 vs. the 500 found in the M6, we expect the fuel mileage benefits to appeal to many with gas prices holding high. The 535d gets a combined 35.3 mpg on the British standard rating. The M6 manages just 12/18 on the EPA cycle. CAR anticipates that we'll hear more about the car later in the year. And as a sidenote, we know tuners like Hamman have already worked that mill up to 350 hp/487 lb-ft of torque, so this could get very interesting.

Looks like the new car intro embargo-breaking will continue, this time overseas. A couple of weeks before the car is set to debut officially at next month's Geneva Motor Show, here are a few images of Maserati's new GT Coupe. This Pininfarina-styled coupe takes the Quattroporte's styling in a much bolder direction.

The current Coupes have failed to enthuse as much as hoped, although their performance is stellar. As we told you a few days ago, the car should be quite a mover. MotorAuthority is reporting an anticipated (and amazing for a front-engine coupe) 49/51 weight distribution. Rumored to be powered by an upgraded 400 hp 4.2-liter V8, performance should again match the car's promise. As evidenced by the tail lettering, the full GranTurismo name will be used on the new GT. Expect cars on dealer lots by Summer.

And there are rumors of the new GranSport model as well. Featuring an all-new 450 hp 4.7-liter V8 from Alfa Romeo's 8C Competizione, it should better match up against the M6/XKR/DB9 competition. A new Spyder and possibly a Coupe-Convertible with a retractable hardtop should follow some time next year. And of course, this is also the platform that the upcoming entry-level Dino might share when it shows up late this year. That car is still unofficial, but word has it that this baby Ferrari will sell for around 175 large and might not be a Ferrari at all (no Prancing Horse logos, just like the original Dino), just in case there's any backlash.

James May is the Top Gear presenter who on the first show of the new season went and drove a Bugatti Veyron up to near-as-makes-no-difference 253 mph. Hurray for James.

The straight-faced, mop-headed auto enthusiast who usually takes alpha presenter Jeremy Clarkson's punches and rolls with 'em suggests in his Daily Telegraph column (he's got one too) that the Bugatti Veyron will be the fastest car he's ever driven and likely the fastest car that will ever be made.

He's convinced, in fact, that the Veyron is the last supercar. Such a downer, James.

Honda sends some CR-V production south of the border

In 2008, 50,000 CR-Vs will be cranked out of Honda's assembly plant in Guadalajara, Mexico. Currently, the plant is used to build Accord sedans, to the tune of about 30k per year, but when CR-V production begins, they'll be no more hecho en Mexico Accords finding their way north. Instead, production of Honda's midsize sedan will move to their plant in Marysville, Ohio.

The move, which reportedly cost Honda over $8 million in upgrades, is due to a high level of demand for the 'lil 'ute in the U.S. that isn't being met by the automaker's plant in East Liberty, Ohio.

Of the 50,000 CR-Vs to be produced annually, half will head into the States, while the rest will remain south of the border. The production shift will begin this fall.

The DBX: Aston Martin's forthcoming supercar

In the wake of the Aston Martin sale last week, information about the green-lighting of the Rapide and the ramping up of the DBS was accompanied by a moniker that many assumed would be an all-wheel-drive version of the DB-series Aston: the DBX. According to AutoExpress, the DBX is actually a codename for a new Aston Martin flagship that will join the exalted ranks of the McLaren SLR, Bugatti Veyron and other hyper-exotics.

This new Aston supercar will be built on the aluminum and composite VH chassis and inspired by the Zagato, which originally launched back in 1986. Expect power to come from a highly-tuned 6.0L V12, making upwards of 700 HP and sending power to the rear wheels via six-speed manual gearbox. The new higher-ups have set performance targets that include a 0-60 sprint in under 3.7 seconds along with a top speed around 205 MPH.

Naturally, no pricing information is available, but according to AE's website, expect this ultra-Aston to carry a price tag in the £350,000 realm.

SSC confident Ultimate Aero TT will be will be world's fastest soon

A few days ago we reported about Shelby Super Car's (SSC) attempt at the worlds fastest car title and now we have an unofficial update. We just got word from a trackside observer that the record was NOT broken. After getting snowed out on day 1, the cast and crew reconvened on Highway 93 in Nevada and had another go at the record books today. Test pilot (and veteran Silver State Challenge 200 mph club member) Rick Doria reported wheelspin at 190 shifting into 6th on one pass that yielded about 221 mph, but felt confident enough to try again. A couple more passes and the 1,183-hp Ultimate Aero TT posted a top speed around 230 mph at 50% throttle in 6th. At that point the car had traveled the 2 miles deemed appropriate for the test runs. The driver reported that he was sure the car could easily break the 253 mph Veyron speed, let alone the "official" 242 of the Koenigsegg CCR. The group will head back to the shop for now and try a second set of runs in a couple of weeks if all goes as planned. We'll post updates as more information becomes available.

Smart fortwo concept trailers prove fortwo will tow the line

In what appears to be way of addressing the lack of trunk space in the new Smart fortwo, DCX has released a few sketches showing the Smart accessorized to appeal to that overly-pursued active lifestyle consumer.

The three drawings (two of which are posted after the jump) include the above boat trailer, a motorcycle hauler and a traveling living space; complete with sink, stove, storage and bed.

While all are intriguing, Smart doesn't intend to build these trailers anytime soon. We certainly like the idea, but are a bit worried about getting stuck behind one on our way up to Tahoe.

The safety-obsessed people over at Siemens VDO have developed a new system that, depending on the noise produced by a crash, will figure out the best way to deploy the airbags.

The Crash Impact Sound Sensor (CISS) is quicker on the draw than other systems (up to 15 milliseconds), and depending on the information it receives from the audio sensors, it can determine where the collision took place and the level of severity. In turn, the only airbags deployed would be the ones necessary to protect the affected passengers.

The system is particularly important to the vertically challenged, who have sustained serious injury when an airbag was deployed unnecessarily.

Geneva Motor Show: Spyker C12 Zagato wows Geneva crowd

No, that's not Kiefer Sutherlands favorite number, it's the number of units Spyker will build of this ultra limited-edition C12 Zagato. Designed in conjunction with the famed Zagato styling house that brought us such cars as the old Aston Martin DB4 Zagato and the newer Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Zagato Coupe, the C12 Zagato was designed in the wake of Spyker of acquiring the Midland Formula 1 team and therefore incorporates some F1 design cues into long and highly ornate body.

Based on Spyker's flagship C12 model, the Zagato version uses a 6.0L W12 engine sourced from the only company in the world who makes those engines – Volkswagen. Here it produces 500bhp (a supercharger can be added that bumps power to 650bhp) and will launch the relatively lightweight (3,086 lbs.) C12 Zagato to 60 mph in a short 3.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 193 mph.

From all reports, Spyker's handle about as well as a 1989 Chevy Silverado (we've never driven one ourselves, and probably won't now), so we know that people buy them for the rolling art they are. The C12 Zagato is no exception and manages to combine the familiar aeronautical cues for which Spyker is known (check out the propeller blade wheels) with an F1-inspired nose that we hope is functional to some degree. Is it pretty to look at? We'll let you be the judge, but it is very rare and at €495,000 ($648,000 USD), very expensive.

Audi Q7 to get Le Mans-derived V12 TDI

Audi's gonna do it. According to a German report, they're putting a race-derived 6.0-liter V12 TDI in the Q7 SUV for 2008. The street version of the V12 TDI will be the most powerful passenger car diesel in the world, with -- get this -- 500 horsepower and a staggering 720 lb ft of torque on tap. And it doesn't end there. According to the same report, the monster diesel will find its way into the next A8 sedan, due in 2010.

Unless you've been living in a cave, you know that the V12 TDI is the engine that led the Audi R10 to American Le Mans Series dominance this year, and powered Audi to overall victory at the 24 hours of Le Mans.

Now, the million-dollar question is this: Will we see this engine here?

Jeep Compass Rallye for the UK

Remember the kitted-up Compass Rallye concept that made its debut at the 2005 Frankfurt show? The show car looks were dropped for the production version, which is currently available here in the US and will start appearing in European showrooms soon. The UK, however, is a different matter entirely.

In the UK, the only Jeep Compass that will be available is a right-hand-drive limited-production version of the concept car. The 2007 Jeep Compass Rallye will be available only with the Freedom Drive 1 all-wheel drive system and the aforementioned appearance package. Black wheels, aero-style bumpers and side skirts, and extra foglamps give the Compass Rallye its unique look.

The decision to make only the Rallye edition available was the result of UK market research that showed that the bespoilered Compass would be a better seller than the standard vehicle. To illustrate the limited availability of the Compass Rallye, Jeep stated that the UK division's other new arrival, Patriot, will outsell the Compass Rally 10:1. Pricing won't be announced until later.

Both the Patriot and Compass, as you know by now, are built on the same platform as the Dodge Caliber, and as such, they share powerplants with the little Dodge. Like the Euro Caliber, the Compass Rallye and Patriot will be available with either the 2.4L gasoline 4-cylinder or the VW-sourced 2.0 diesel. Looking at the aeroed-out Compass Rallye, we can't help but wonder what it'd be like to have it in the US ... with AWD and the Caliber SRT4 mill. Now that'd be something...

Detroit Auto Show: 2008 Cadillac CTS revealed!

Before the highly anticipated debut of the Cadillac CTS later today, pictures and details about Caddy's newest luxury sedan have surfaced.

The all-new CTS grows both in width and length, with a striking exterior that we've only seen parts of up until now. The interior gets a thorough redesign as well, with a new dash, steering wheel and instrument cluster that may finally bring it to the levels of its European competition.

At the top of the line, you'll the direct-injected, 3.6-liter V6, producing 300 HP and 270 lb.-ft. of torque. The new-to-the-CTS mill will be mated to a six-speed automatic, although in basic trim, you'll be able to row the gears yourself via a short throw, six-speed cog swapper. Power will naturally find its way down to the rear wheels, however, the 2008 model will offer a CTS-first: all-wheel-drive.

Later on, expect to find a V-series CTS, packing an additional two cylinders and producing adequate oomph to keep up with some of its hi-po rivals.

Might not sound too impressive until you remember that this huge SUVan packs 290 hp and 516 ft-lbs of torque to move its 7 passengers with style and speed.

So as concept vehicles go, this one might underwhelm a bit until you realize Mercedes might bring this new bodylifted GL over when the Blutec finally hits these shores. So this might in fact be the mildly revised (for the better, we think) GL production vehicle we are looking at. Although it looks a bit like a Mercedes grilled Highlander, the GL-Class is a pretty competent SUV that has garnered its fair share of praise and the Bluetec technology (despite missing out on 50-state approval) promises to make diesels even more attractive in the States.

#2 not good enough for Toyota?

Apparently moving ahead of Ford isn't going to be good enough for Toyota. With their latest global projection of 9.42-million vehicles planned for 2007, it's looking more likely they might catch General Motors to become the world's No. 1 auto maker. For 2008, they will be teaming with the Klingons to challenge for interstellar domination. The 2007 guesstimate represents a 4% bump over this year's total, putting them well ahead the 9.2 million vehicles GM is reporting for this year. Of course, with some hot new products in the pipeline, GM can surely see a similar increase over this year's figures as well.

The problems that have plagued GM over the past few years seem to be resolving themselves, but Toyota is so strong right now, it could be a close fight. Ford is already resigned to being number 3, even with a slew of new products in the mix. Rather than seeing this as more bad news for the domestics, think of it as a realization of the new global reality and the fact that a slimmer GM and Ford might be able to return to profitablility even while giving up market share.

Best looking Porsche Panamera yet

The Porsche Panamera four-door coupe is not scheduled for release until 2008, but with spy shots of a test mule running the Nurburgring in Germany having already infiltrated the internet, armchair designers like ourselves are already critiquing the car's shape. Infomotori.co.uk has commissioned a series of renderings that show the Panamera as a collaboration between what they think the Porsche sedan will look like and what they hope it will look like. There's a tension there, as the mule seen in test shots hasn't received the most favorable of judgments so far. These renderings, however, show a more stout Panamera with a taller front fascia that gives the car some visual weight. The mesh grille flanked by LED fog lamps is sharp, although the Infomotori people keep it real by giving their rendering 996-style headlights, which the actual production car is rumored to have. One thing we dig about Audi is the mantle they've assumed as the pioneers in diesel power. Most specifically, making diesels that knock the socks off gasoline engines, and shattering conventional wisdom in the process. As if dominating endurance sports car racing wasn't enough, Audi announced they'd be competing with bio-diesel next year, as we reported earlier. Still not enough? Crews watched in horror as a high-powered Lamborghini Murcielago spun out of control- two months after Richard Hammond's smash.

The Mirror columnist, 36, was left fighting for his life after a 288mph jet car crash on September 20.

This time the gold Lamborghini, which can reach speeds of up to 205mph, aqua-planedon a rain-soaked runway in Dunsfold Park, Surrey.

It shot on to grass bordering the track, denting its front bumper. The driver, described by the BBC as "a professional" on a test run, was not injured.Read More...

2009 Ferrari Dino Is Coming

We've confirmed a top-secret project for a new, entry-level Ferrari to slot below the F430. The car is ambitiously timed for a late 2008 launch (although suppliers expect it to be delayed until early 2009). Officially, company executives scoff at the notion of such a Ferrari, but what if the new Ferrari wasn't, strictly speaking, a Ferrari? Just as was the case with the original Dino (see sidebar), Ferrari's new entry-level model probably will not be adorned with a Ferrari badge.

The car that's set to become the new Dino originally was half of a two-car Maserati program that used a shortened Quattroporte platform. The first is a two-plus-two that debuts at Geneva and will replace the GranSport coupe later in 2007. (The next Maserati Spyder, however, won't arrive until 2010 and is based on new four-wheel-drive components borrowed from the next-generation Alfa Romeo 166 sedan.)

The second car in the program is a smaller, lighter two-seater. And despite the official denials, Ferrari is a logical home for it, particularly when you learn that both cars need to go into production if the $50 million investment is ever to be recovered and that the next F430 (due in 2009) will move up significantly in base price from today's $175,000 to more than $200,000. That makes room for a lower-priced model, and by going the Dino route, there's no danger of diluting the Ferrari brand image.

The Maserati connection would define the car's key ingredients. They include a front-mounted engine, a control-arm suspension with electronic damper control, Brembo brakes with optional carbon-ceramic discs, and a body structure that uses plenty of aluminum and carbon fiber. What powers the new Dino? A high-revving 4.0-liter V-8 rated at 430 hp is a realistic starting point--not bad considering the car's target weight of 3500 pounds.

Priced at about $170,000, this car will be positioned against the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the Porsche 911 Turbo, and the Audi R8. Boasting a Ferrari-shared V-8, a rear transaxle (like that from the 599GTB), a retractable hard top with an optional glass roof panel, and a steering wheel complete with the manettino drive-mode selector, it has plenty of Ferrari DNA.

It also picks up interesting historical threads. Not only does it resurrect the Dino concept, but it would be the first front-engine, eight-cylinder Ferrari in a half-century. Two sports racers with that configuration--powered by tiny 75-hp, 1.5-liter units--were built in 1940, but they wore Auto Avio Costruzioni 815 badges. Why? Because Enzo Ferrari, who had left Alfa Romeo to found his own company, agreed on a four-year grace period before he would start putting his name on his firm's cars.

Veyron Roadster image surfaces

Just a photoshop, we think, but this image from WorldCarFans gives us a peek at what the 2008 Veyron Roadster might look like. As we reported in July, Bugatti has moved forward with plans for a targa version of its luxury supercar. Rather than a true drop-top, a laminated glass roof panel has been developed by the same people who brought us the folding hardtop with sunroof on the Volkswagen Eos. With no room to store that panel onboard, speculation is that a temporary fabric panel is being engineered to cover the interior in an emergency situation.

As you might imagine for a car capable of 400 km/h, the Veyron Targa will need some beefing up when it loses its roof. Windshield pillars, as well as the chassis will need some additional strengthening. To compensate for that extra weight, Bugatti will most likely use carbon fiber to build the doors and hood. A freshening of the grille and the headlights is also expected. Those lights, btw, will now be doing a Lexus, and turning with the front wheels. The other major change is that the Veyron Targa's top speed will be reduced to a mere 217 mph.

While spy shots of the vehicle had us heralding the addition of a second SS-branded utility vehicle in the Bowtie lineup (the first being the Trailblazer SS), it appears this Equinox will be one S short of being a Super Sport. Largest order ever of Rolls Royce Phantoms delivered

The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong has been shuttling guests to and from the airport and around town in Rolls-Royce automobiles since 1970, when it took delivery of a then-record seven Silver Shadows. Thus began a tradition that saw the hotel place the single largest order for Rolls-Royce automobiles several times through the intervening decades (breaking their own order-size records along the way). Today, the Peninsula outdid itself, taking delivery of fourteen long-wheelbase Phantoms built to custom specifications through RR's Bespoke program.

Each car is finished in Brewster Green with a tan stripe, and has been customized with Bespoke features such as Peninsula Hotel sill plates, an enlarged trunk, a coolbox to store chilled towels, compartments for used towels in the doors, MP3 jacks for the rear seats, relocated rear-seat climate controls, repositioned and enhanced lighting, and even "No Smoking" plaques. 2008 Jaguar S-Type debuts with mild tweaks

Jaguar unveiled a mildly tweaked 2008 S-Type at the Bologna Motor Show today to what we imagine could only be a reaction of complete indifference. As we reported earlier, the S-Type's replacement will be called the XF and be a much better car in every way compared to its predecessor, which makes a refreshened S-Type for 2008 a big snore. The changs for 2008 include disseminating the racier S-Type R's bumper and mesh grille across the entire range, as well as what appear to be smoked lenses for the headlights. The latter could've already been on the S-Type, as we have to admit we haven't stared one down in a while. New wheels are also being offered, including a 19-inch set called "the Barcelona" on the S-Type R.

The interior also gets upgraded for 2008 with new seats and non-perforated leather, and the six-speed auto is now standard across the line. There are now only four trim levels for the UK-spec S-Type that include the Spirit, XS, SE and R. The good news is that the R model's price has been reduced by over £5,000.

Inside the ProStar is a new high-tech dashboard and a steering wheel with enough buttons to rival a new playstation.

Before you get spooked by a truck with lots of gizmos, according to the story it is user friendly and lets the driver not only monitor fuel and mileage, but geo-positioning, and easy to read details about truck functions. The dashboard can even expand to use side and rear view video cameras as future add-ons.

High-tech capabilites aside, the Pro-Star's power, comfort, and handling appear to be the strongest features.

Need for MAZDASPEED? New EA game to feature hot hatch

The new MAZDASPEED3 will be featured in the upcoming Electronic Arts video game Need for Speed Carbon, which will be in stores across North America on November 1. Leading nontraditional marketing company Channel M worked with Mazda and EA, as well as retailers GameStop and EB Games, to create a campaign around the car and the game. Not only will the MAZDASPEED3 be integrated into the game, but Channel M is going to have the car featured at the game's debut in GameStop and EB Games stores nationwide.

Channel M CEO David Teichner explained today that besides heavy in-game exposure, Mazda will be a big part of an in-store pre-order campaign in GameStop and EB Games stores, that will give customers a chance to win a real MAZDASPEED3 car for themselves. During the month of November, mall events will be held in 16 cities. Besides the obligatory car displays, an organized tournament will take place with the winners getting an invite to compete in the finals in Las Vegas, where the winner will drive off in a new MAZDASPEED3 .

Honda Civic Type-R in Paris

We're going to spare you the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth that seems to take place every time a new Type-R is released and the U.S. is left off the shipping invoice. It's safe to say that we're getting used to the disappointment, but when we compare the newly designed Euro-Civic to our own two- and four-door offerings, it feels like the knife gets twisted a little deeper into our gut.

For those of you who are blessed with slightly thicker skin and won't start sobbing uncontrollably at the unfair world in which we live, Honda was kind enough to produce a little montage of their new Civic Type-R as it sat on its stand in Paris. The video provides some drool-worthy shots of all the little details that adorn their newest FF-fun box.

The Type-R, for those of you who haven't already pored over the specs, will come equipped with a 2-liter, 200 hp inline-4 that will consume the sprint to 60 in about six and half seconds. The iVTEC powerplant will putter around like any other Honda until about 5,800 RPM, when the second cam lobe brings the engine to boil and proceeds to runs the tach to its 8k redline. A six-speed manual sends power to the seven-spoke, 18" alloys, wrapped in 225/40 rubber of unspecified origin. The interior benefits from Alcantara wrapped racing buckets, a three-spoke wheel, the love-it or hate-it, two-tier dash and a 'Start' button that allows the lucky owner to channel the part of the brain that controls racing ambitions.

In the meantime, we'll wallow in self-pity, occasionally asking why the Honda-Gods are angry with us, again.

This November, Land Rover will begin the sale of an updated Range Rover Sport that will come equipped with either a 2.7-liter, turbo-diesel V6, or a new TDV8 that produces 40-percent more power and torque than its six-cylinder brethren. Only you can't have either, because they'll only be available in Europe.

While covering all the goings on in Paris last week, the Range Rover press event didn't make it on our short list and that's when news of the new diesel debuted. With a price tag just shy of $100,000, all the luxury accoutrements you'd expect are included, along with some newly developed/acquired technology in the form of adaptive cruise control, dual alarms, voice recognition and an adaptive automatic transmission.

2006 Volkswagen Rabbit

Philadelphia Europeans think we're crazy. American buyers snap up the Volkswagen Jetta sedan over its hatchback Golf sibling ten to one. This is especially galling to those who know that the Golf offers more space for large items and is as good as the Jetta for carrying people. The late-arriving, fifth-generation Golf will be called the Rabbit, the U.S.-only moniker used for the first-generation Golf from 1975 to 1984. VW maintains that the Golf badge means little to Americans, whereas resurrecting the Rabbit nameplate gives VW a fun and creative opportunity for marketing the car.

So how does this Golf--er, Rabbit--drive? Very nicely. It features a well-damped chassis that uses VW's four-link independent rear suspension. The electromechanical steering provides good feedback through the twisties and decent on-center feel on the freeway. The five-cylinder engine is smooth and makes good torque, but revving it to its almost diesel-like 5800-rpm redline is uninspiring.

Either way, the torquey engine and excellent chassis give a more upmarket feel than the two-door's $15,620 base price suggests. The better-equipped four-door model starts $2000 higher. Options such as stability control and a sunroof can push the Rabbit close to $20,000.

Whether or not you like the resurrected name, you can relax knowing that the new Rabbit offers sophisticated driving dynamics and interior quality that is usually lacking at this price point.

Mazda added a high-performance model to its compact Mazda3 range with the introduction of the Mazda3 MPS at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. The Mazda3 MPS features a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a stiffened suspension setup and unique exterior and interior styling cues.

North America will also receive a version of the Mazda3 MPS, but it will be dubbed Mazdaspeed3 when it hits U.S. dealerships in late fall 2006 as a 2007 model.

Exterior
Available in four-door hatchback form, the Mazdaspeed3 has widened front fenders, a large supplemental grille in the front bumper, rectangular fog lamps and ground effects. It also wears 18-inch alloy wheels fitted with low-profile, 45-series tires.

Porsche unveils the 2007 RS Spyder

Porsche has unveiled the RS Spyder for the 2007 sports car racing season, and, as you might imagine, they've made some improvements. Customer teams will finally be able to take delivery of the LMP2-class racer, which has been raced exclusively by Team Penske in the American Le Mans Series this season. The Penske Spyders have enjoyed success, and on Saturday they locked up the ALMS LMP2 team and manufacturer's championships with a a 1-2 finish in LMP2 (5-6 overall) at Petit Le Mans.

From what Porsche is saying, the 2007 machine is going to be even better, and we're already looking forward to the Porsche vs. Acura LMP2 matchups next season. The new Spyder gets chassis improvements, tweaked aerodynamics, an easier-to-maintain body, and better cooling. With its mandatory air restrictors in place, the RS Spyder's 3.4L V8 churns out 504 horsepower at 10,300 rpm. That's a 23-horse increase over Penske's 2006 rides, and it should be more than enough to get the 1,709-lb car around the various sports car circuits as quickly as possible.

Ford announced today that its Fusion mid-size sedan equipped with all-wheel drive will have a base MSRP of $23,430 when it goes on sale at dealers this week. The upper level SEL model will base for $24,525. That base price comes in below its stable mate, the Mercury Milan AWD, which begins at $24,315. Ford is also touting that the Fusion AWD costs less than the Toyota Camry LE V6 ($23,960) and Honda Accord SE V6 ($23,945), essentially making the case that customers can get a Fusion with all-wheel drive for free at the same price as front-wheel driven competitors. Paris Motor Show: Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG

AMG presented the results of its latest Mercedes-Benz performance manipulation with the S 63 AMG at the 2006 Paris Motor show this week. The eight-cylinder S 63 is blessed with AMG's new 6.3-liter, 525-hp powerplant, which boasts the highest specific output and torque of any series-produced naturally aspirated eight cylinder in the world. The 465 ft-lb of twist from AMG's monster V8 turns the S-class into a weapon of mass rubber destruction with the ability to sprint from 0-60 in 4.6 seconds. Other changes include special tuning for the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed transmission, AMG body styling, AMG alloy wheels, AMG sport suspension, and an exclusive AMG interior. The autobahn-burning S 63 AMG is also offered in both standard and extended wheelbases, just in case you need to haul a couple of your close NBA player friends around at extra-legal speeds.

Aston V8 Vantage gets flappy paddles

According to AutoExpress' sources, Aston Martin will be debuting a six-speed, automated, manual gearbox for its V8 Vantage at the Paris Motor Show. The clutchless setup allows for quick up/down shifts, via steering wheel-mounted paddles, and also a fully automatic mode for sedate cruising.

The new transmission will be similar to the one offered in the baby Aston's elder, the Vanquish, which may be a blessing/curse. Early on, most reported that the big-V's manu-matic was lurchy and difficult to drive with any measure of smoothness. According to Aston, a software update was released to cure those ills.

Aston Martin also plans on releasing details about a partnership with the world-renowned seat maker, Recaro, which will furnish both the DB9 and Vantage with new, more bolstered and adjustable thrones. 'Cause when you drop that kind of coin on a GT, you gotta be comfy, right?
